Boiler inspection preparation is important for a thorough, safe internal examination. When a commercial boiler is correctly prepared for an inspection, it will allow the inspector to see different parts of the boiler and determine if they are working properly. Make sure to follow these simple steps for preparing your boiler for an inspection.
Here’s how to prepare for an internal boiler inspection procedure:
- Turn off the flame.
- Lock out or tag out the fuel supply and ignition system according to the boiler’s instructions.
- Disconnect the pipe or valve at the most convenient point to avoid steam or hot water leakage.
- In oil boilers, remove atomizers or oil gun assemblies. In gas boilers, blank off supply lines or close drain cocks. Make sure fuel or vapors cannot get into the boiler furnace.
- Let the water cool. Make sure the water is cool enough in order to prevent boiler damage.
- Clean the waterside of the boiler with water not less than 70′ F, if advised.
- Prior to opening any part of the boiler connected to a common header with other boilers, close, lock out or tag out the steam or water stop valves (including bypass) according to the instructions. Open drain valves or cocks between two closed stop valves.
- Make sure all drains and vent lines are open.
- Close and padlock the blowdown valves.
- Drain the boiler.
If you’re an inspector, be sure to follow these safety tips:
- Confirm that it is safe to enter the fire or water side of the boiler. Inspectors should not enter areas with flammable, inert or toxic gases, vapors or dust without protective equipment.
- Ensure the oxygen content of the breath-able atmosphere is between 19.5% and 23.5%.
- Put on protective clothing or other equipment such as gloves, foot and eye protection or respiratory protection.
- Specify if an attendant needs to remain outside of the boiler. The attendant should be prepared to secure rescue assistance if needed.
In addition to an internal inspection, check with your state to see if your boiler must also undergo a government inspection. The Internet has plenty of resources on what inspectors check for during their examinations and has details on any applicable deadlines. If your facility is in New Jersey, visit ‘Mechanical Inspection Bureau of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Compliance‘for more information on government inspections.
